Products Description

Trunnion mounted ball valves are an excellent choice for on/off service in large high pressure applications because the ball is secured at the top and bottom of the design. These valves are fire-test approved and include design features that ensure electrical continuity between the ball, stem and body. Low temperature and high temperature metal seat configurations are also available. All designs are forged for improved mechanical properties, pressure retention and quality.

What is a fixed ball valve?

The trunnion mounted ball valve is a quarter-turn valve used to control or isolate the flow of fluids or gases. The ball is supported by the top and bottom and rotates between the two seats. The pressure differential forces the seat ring against the ball, creating a seal, and with low or no pressure differential, a spring behind the seat ensures the seal. Trunnion mounted ball valves are a good solution for larger sizes and higher pressures as well as very low pressure and pulsating pressure applications. Advantages include lower operating torque, which is critical for metal-seated valves in high temperature and abrasive applications.

Floating ball valves differ in that the seat supports the ball, allowing the ball to move or float between the two seats under pressure. Floating balls are typically used for small sizes and lower pressures. The valve is designed to seal against the downstream seat only when the ball moves from the upstream side.

It is important to understand that trunnion mounted ball valves are typically more complex than floating ball valves, have more components, and are therefore generally more expensive. In smaller sizes, trunnion mounting or floating ball designs are available, so the specific performance and sealing characteristics required for a given application must be understood when making a selection.
